Are dry bags fully waterproof?

A properly closed roll-top dry bag is waterproof against rain, spray and short immersion, which covers most paddling. It isn't designed to be held underwater for long. If your kit might be submerged — strapped to a kayak deck in rough water, for example — choose a bag with an airtight zip and an IPX7 or IPX8 rating.

How do you close a roll-top dry bag?

Push out excess air, line up the stiffened top edge, then fold it over on itself at least three times in tight, flat folds before clipping the buckle. Some bags have side clips so the rolled top also forms a carry handle. Leaving a little air inside helps the bag float if it goes overboard.

What size dry bag do I need?

Small bags of 5–10 L hold a phone, keys, snacks and a first-aid kit on a paddleboard. Around 20–35 L fits a change of clothes and a jacket for a day's kayaking. Sizes of 55 L and above, especially backpack and duffel styles, suit multi-day canoe trips, sailing and wet camping. Several small bags organise kit better than one large one.

What do IPX7 and IPX8 mean?

IP ratings come from the IEC 60529 standard. IPX7 means protection against temporary immersion in water up to 1 metre for 30 minutes; IPX8 means protection beyond that, under conditions the manufacturer specifies. A rating doesn't make a bag or phone case suitable for diving, so check the depth and time the brand states.
