What snorkelling gear should a beginner buy?

A mask that fits, a snorkel and a pair of fins. In UK waters add a wetsuit, neoprene boots if you choose open-heel fins, and gloves and a hood outside high summer. A bright tow float or surface marker buoy helps boats and companions see you. Snorkel with a buddy and check the tide and forecast first.

Can I use diving goggles instead of a mask?

Swimming goggles cover only the eyes, so as you go down you cannot equalise the air inside them and they press painfully into your face. A snorkelling or diving mask encloses the nose, letting you breathe a little air into it to balance the pressure. For anything beyond swimming at the surface, choose a mask.

What is a dry snorkel?

A dry snorkel has a float valve at the top that seals when the tube is submerged or hit by a wave, keeping most water out. Semi-dry snorkels use a splash guard instead. Both usually have a purge valve at the bottom to clear any water that does get in. Dry tops suit beginners and choppy conditions.

What is a diving helmet, and do I need one?

Traditional diving helmets are surface-supplied equipment used by trained commercial divers, not recreational kit. For snorkelling, a conventional mask and snorkel is the usual choice, which make clearing water and equalising simple. Recreational scuba uses a mask, regulator and buoyancy device, and needs training with a recognised club or school.
