Adjustable Dumbbells

Adjustable Dumbbells: frequently asked questions

What weight adjustable dumbbells should I buy?

For general strength at home, many people start with a pair that goes up to about 11–14 kg per hand, which covers presses, rows and lunges for most beginners. If you already lift, look at 20–34 kg per hand for heavier rows and presses. Some systems can be extended later with add-on plates or expansion kits.

Do I need a rack for adjustable dumbbells?

It isn't essential, but it helps. Most dial and slide dumbbells sit in a tray that must be on a flat surface each time you change the weight; a stand raises that tray to around waist height so you don't lift from the floor, and keeps it level. Check the rack fits your model and is rated for the combined weight.

Dial, pin or spin-lock: which adjustable dumbbell is best?

Dial and twist-select dumbbells change weight in seconds while sitting in their tray, which suits supersets. Pin-select block dumbbells are short and compact for their weight. Spin-lock or screw-collar sets use loose plates – they're slower to adjust, but with a connector bar some double as a short barbell.

Are flat-sided adjustable dumbbells worth it?

Flat or square-sided dumbbells don't roll when you put them down, which is handy on a bench, for push-ups or renegade rows on the handles, and in rooms where a rolling weight could damage skirting boards. Round designs are more traditional. Both work the same muscles, so choose the shape that suits your space.
