What does hydrostatic head mean on a tent?

Hydrostatic head is the height of a column of water, in millimetres, that a fabric can hold before water seeps through. A flysheet rated around 1,500 mm handles typical summer showers, while 3,000 mm and above suits prolonged rain and windy sites. Seams must be taped too, and a taut, well-pegged pitch matters as much as the number.

What size tent does a family of four need?

Choose a tent rated for at least five or six people. Berth ratings assume sleeping mats laid edge to edge with no space for bags, so a family of four is more comfortable in a six-berth with a separate living area or porch for wet boots and cooking kit. Check the floor plan and standing height, not just the berth count.

Are pop-up tents any good?

Pop-up and instant tents spring open or unfold on pre-attached poles in a minute or two, which suits festivals and short stays. They usually pack into a large, awkward bag and can be harder to repair. Traditional pole tents take longer to pitch but pack smaller, are easier to fix in the field and are often more stable in strong wind.

Can I wild camp with a tent in the UK?

In Scotland, responsible wild camping is generally allowed under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. In England and Wales you need the landowner's permission almost everywhere, with Dartmoor the notable exception, where backpack camping is permitted in mapped areas under its own rules. Use a small, discreet tent, pitch late, leave early and leave no trace.
