For sleeping out, check three things. Length: a hammock of roughly 2.7–3 m lets you lie on the diagonal, which gives a much flatter back than lying along the centre line. Suspension: wide webbing straps of 2.5 cm or more spread the load and are kinder to bark than rope. Weather: in Britain you also need a tarp over a ridgeline and an underquilt or sleeping mat, because air moving beneath you strips heat quickly even on mild nights. Hang the straps at about 30 degrees, with the lowest point near chair height.

What is a tented hammock?

A tented hammock, or hammock tent, combines the hammock bed with an integrated bug net and a rainfly, so you set up one system instead of a separate hammock, net and tarp. Lay-flat designs add spreader bars or a wider platform for a flatter sleeping position, which suits side sleepers and anyone who finds a traditional banana-shaped hang uncomfortable.

Is a hammock warm enough for camping in the UK?

On its own, rarely. Your sleeping bag's insulation is squashed flat underneath you, and moving air cools your back quickly. Add an underquilt hung beneath the hammock, or a foam or inflatable mat inside it, and pitch a tarp over a ridgeline to keep off wind and rain. Then pick a sleeping bag rated for the night-time temperature you expect.

Where can I hang a camping hammock?

Scotland's Outdoor Access Code allows responsible wild camping, but south of the border camping on most land, including an overnight hang, needs the owner's say-so first. Use wide, tree-friendly straps, pick healthy trees at least 15 cm thick, avoid dead branches, fences and posts, and remove every strap when you pack up so nothing is left behind.

What is the difference between a hammock and a hammock camping chair?

A hammock hangs between two anchor points and is made for lying down or sleeping. A hammock camping chair has its own folding steel or aluminium frame with a fabric seat slung inside, so it swings gently but stands anywhere: a beach, a treeless campsite pitch or a patio.
