What size paddleboard should I buy?

Most adults start on an all-round inflatable around 10'6" to 11' long and 32–34 inches wide. Heavier paddlers, families sharing a board or anyone fishing should look at 35 inch widths and higher capacity, while longer, narrower boards suit touring. Make sure the maximum capacity covers you plus a bag, dog or child.

Do I need a licence to paddleboard or kayak in the UK?

On many rivers and canals, yes. The Canal & River Trust and the Environment Agency require a licence for unpowered craft, including paddleboards, on the waters they manage, and Paddle UK membership includes a licence for many of them. The sea and some lakes do not need one, but venue rules vary, so check before you launch.

Which leash should I use on a paddleboard?

On flat water, a coiled ankle or calf leash keeps the board within reach if you fall in, and a straight leash is the norm in surf. On rivers and anywhere with current, use a quick-release waist leash, because a leash attached at the ankle can snag on branches or other obstructions. Wear a buoyancy aid as well as the leash.

What do I need to start surfing in the UK?

A wetsuit suited to the season, typically a 3/2 mm suit in summer and a 5/4 mm or 5/3 mm suit with boots, gloves and a hood in winter, plus a board suited to your level and a leash. Beginners usually start on a large soft-top or a bodyboard. On lifeguarded beaches, surfboards belong between the black and white chequered flags, while bodyboarders stay between the red and yellow flags.
