Weighted Vests for Women

Weighted vests for women, chosen for fit as much as load: slim, low-profile designs that suit a shorter torso and sit around the bust rather than pressing flat across it. The range covers the HYPERWEAR Hyper Vest FIT in proper S, M and L sizes, the GORUCK Spy Ruck women's vest, ZELUS Z-Fit Slim vests that adjust in small steps, and comfort-fit neoprene vests from BAGAIL and Sportneer designed for walking.

There are two styles to choose between. Adjustable vests with removable inserts let you start very light and add load as you progress, which is handy if you'll use one vest for walks, stairs and circuits. Fixed-weight vests are simpler and usually less bulky. For walking, around 5–10% of body weight is a sensible ceiling to begin with. Look for a front zip or side straps you can cinch so the vest doesn't bounce, mesh panels for warmer days and reflective strips if you'll be out on UK roads at dusk.

Weighted Vests for Women: frequently asked questions

What weight of weighted vest should a woman start with?

For walking, a sensible start is around 2–5 kg, or roughly 5–10% of your body weight. An adjustable vest lets you begin at the lower end and add small inserts as you get used to it. Increase the load gradually, and only once your usual walks feel comfortable at your normal pace and posture.

What makes a weighted vest suitable for women?

Mainly fit. Vests cut for women tend to be shorter in the body, narrower across the shoulders and shaped or adjustable around the chest, so the weight sits on the torso instead of pressing on the bust or riding up. Sized vests usually fit more closely than one-size vests with straps, so compare the brand's measurements with your chest and torso length.

Can I run in a weighted vest?

You can, but choose a low-profile vest with snug side adjustment so it doesn't bounce, and use a lighter load than you would for walking. Running adds impact with every stride, so many people keep the vest for walking, stairs and strength circuits and run without it. Build up slowly and stop if your running form changes.

Neoprene or nylon: which weighted vest material is better?

Neoprene vests feel soft, mould to your body and wipe clean easily, but they're warmer to wear. Nylon vests in 600D or heavier fabric are tougher, often have pockets or MOLLE webbing, and breathe better when they include mesh panels. For indoor workouts and walks either works; for long walks in warm weather, choose a breathable design.
