Yoga & Pilates

Yoga and pilates equipment for home practice, studios and classes: mats in every thickness, blocks, stretch straps, bolsters and wedges, pilates rings and balls, plus balance boards for surf-style yoga and stability work. Mats from Manduka, LIFORME, Bala and Stakt sit alongside studio multi-packs from Sunshine Yoga and CASTLE FLEXX stretch straps.

Picking a mat: 3–4 mm gives a stable, grounded feel for standing and balancing poses and rolls small for travel; 5–6 mm suits mixed practice and cushions the knees; 10–15 mm foam mats are best for mat pilates and floor work but feel wobbly in balances. For grip, a "sticky" PVC or natural rubber surface holds well in pilates and slower yoga, while polyurethane tops suit sweaty sessions. Avoid natural rubber if you have a latex allergy. Tall practitioners should consider a long mat of around 215 cm so hands and feet stay on it in a lunge.

Yoga & Pilates: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a yoga mat and a pilates mat?

Pilates mats are usually thicker, often 8–15 mm, because much of mat pilates is done lying on the back or side and the spine needs cushioning. Yoga mats are thinner, typically 3–6 mm, so your hands and feet can feel the floor for balance. A 5–6 mm mat is a sensible compromise if you do both.

What is a sticky mat?

A sticky mat has a tacky, grippy surface, traditionally PVC, that stops hands and feet sliding and keeps the mat from creeping across a studio floor. Many yoga and pilates classes use them. Natural rubber and polyurethane-topped mats give similar grip with a different feel. Wiping with mild soap and water keeps the surface tacky.

Which pilates accessories should I buy first?

Start with a good mat, then add a pilates ring for inner-thigh and arm work, a resistance band and a small soft ball for core and pelvic exercises. Blocks and a stretch strap help if you are working on flexibility. A qualified teacher can show you how to use each one safely, especially if you are returning after injury or pregnancy.

How do I clean a yoga mat?

Wipe it after each session with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, or a cleaner the mat maker approves, then let it dry flat away from direct sun and radiators. Do not soak natural rubber or suede-topped mats, and avoid harsh cleaners and essential oils, which can break down some surfaces over time.
