Axiom Discs Proton Virus Distance Driver 165–170g — Understable, High-Glide Translucent

The Axiom Discs Proton Virus is an understable distance driver built for big-turn, high-glide lines and reliable, predictable fade at the end of the flight.

Lightweight and PDGA-approved, the Proton Virus blends Axiom’s premium translucent Proton plastic with a forgiving flight profile (Speed 9 | Glide 5 | Turn -3.5 | Fade 1) to deliver long, shapeable drives that favor turnover and S-curves. Produced in 165–170 grams and offered in a rotating palette of transparent “candy” colors, this disc is designed to stay in the air and hold smooth arcs before a gentle finish.

How does the Virus help me shape long turnover lines?

The Virus is purposely understable, so it responds to power and angle by turning right (for a right-hand backhand) before settling into a mild fade. That turn-heavy behavior lets you throw longer controlled rollers or big hyzer-flip-to-flat shots without fighting hard fade.

• Turn rating -3.5 promotes extended rightward movement on RHBH throws.
• High glide (5) keeps the disc lofted for extra distance.
• Speed 9 gives driver distance without extreme release speed requirements.
• Gentle fade (1) provides a predictable finish instead of abrupt hooks.

What does Proton plastic add to performance and durability?

Proton is Axiom’s premium clear blend that combines glossy, eye-catching transparency with strong edge retention and consistent stiffness. It resists chipping and warping across varied temperatures while offering a smooth feel in hand and vivid translucent colors.

• Durable construction holds flight characteristics over time.
• Translucent “candy” colors improve visibility and style on the course.
• Slightly tacky finish aids a secure grip in different conditions.

Which throwers get the most from an understable distance driver?

Power throwers can flex huge turnover lines and finish with a small fade, while average-speed players can use the Virus to stretch distance with minimal effort. Its 165–170g weight range makes it especially manageable when you want maximum turn and glide without overloading release speed.

• Advanced players for high-speed turnover shots and anhyzer flexes.
• Intermediate players seeking extra carry and easier distance drives.
• Approaches where a long, soft finish is preferred instead of a hard hook.

Is the Proton Virus legal for tournament play and what sizes are available?

Yes — the Virus is PDGA-approved for competition, so you can use it in sanctioned events. It’s manufactured in the 18.5 mm class and is distributed in the 165–170 gram weight window; note that specific colors vary by run, so you may receive a different translucent shade than pictured.

• PDGA approval ensures legal tournament use.
• 18.5 mm rim width balances control and distance potential.
• Weight selection favors glide and turn rather than straight-power profiles.

Who this is for: The Axiom Discs Proton Virus is aimed at players who want an easy-to-control distance driver that produces significant turn and sustained glide. If you’re pursuing long S-curves, hyzer-flip-to-flat lines, or simply need a go-to understable driver for windy or shaping situations, the Proton Virus is a practical and visually striking option.
