PETZL Sm'D Climbing Carabiner TRIACT-LOCK — Compact 23 kN D-shape, Keylock

The Petzl Sm'D TRIACT-LOCK is a compact, lightweight D-shaped carabiner built to direct loads to the major axis while offering secure, snag-free locking for climbing and rigging tasks.

Designed for climbers who want maximum efficiency from minimal hardware, the Sm'D pairs a space-saving profile with Petzl’s TRIACT-LOCK mechanism and a Keylock nose. Its asymmetrical D geometry concentrates force on the strongest axis, while features like the Tibloc keeper hole and smooth interior reduce accidental catches and make tethering small progress-capture devices simple and reliable.

How does the Sm'D TRIACT-LOCK improve ropework and belaying?

The Sm'D’s D-shape channels load toward the major axis, increasing strength where you need it during belaying, lowering, or pulley setups. Its compact body keeps the system tidy and reduces bulk on a harness or anchor.

• 23 kN major-axis strength for secure load-bearing
• Asymmetrical D-shape optimizes load direction and device alignment
• Compact footprint (41–55 g) reduces pack and harness clutter
• Fluid interior lessens rope and webbing snagging

What safety features does the TRIACT-LOCK provide?

TRIACT-LOCK is a three-stage locking system that resists accidental opening, combining security with straightforward operation even with gloves. The Keylock nose eliminates hooks and catches that snag on bolts or webbing, making unclipping and racking smoother.

• Three-step TRIACT-LOCK requires deliberate actions to open
• Keylock nose prevents catching on anchors and slings
• Durable gate and spine finish stand up to repeated use

Can I attach small devices like TIBLOC or micro pulleys to the Sm'D?

Yes—the Sm'D includes a dedicated Tibloc keeper hole in the spine so you can tether a micro-device with cord and keep the system loss-proof. This makes it ideal for hauling, progress capture, or backup configurations where a small device must stay attached.

• Tibloc keeper hole secures small progress-capture tools with cord
• Hole placement preserves main carabiner strength and geometry
• Works well with micro pulleys and backup devices for compact setups

Which Sm'D variant should I choose for aid climbing or quick clipping?

If you need fast, repetitive clipping for aid climbing, the non-locking WALL (M39A S/SN) version with a straight gate is designed for easier hooking and rapid progression. For belaying, anchoring, or multipurpose use, choose the TRIACT-LOCK locking version for added security.

• WALL non-locking straight gate suited to aid-climbing clipping
• TRIACT-LOCK versions preferred for belay and anchor safety
• All variants retain the Keylock nose and smooth interior design

Who is this for? The Petzl Sm'D TRIACT-LOCK is aimed at sport climbers, trad climbers, guides, and technicians who want a lightweight, efficient carabiner that concentrates load on the major axis while offering a secure locking option. It’s a solid choice for anyone who needs compact hardware for belays, rigging, hauling, or systems that incorporate micro devices like TIBLOCs—especially when reducing snagging and pack bulk matters.
