Sun Company ProMap ultra-light baseplate map compass — declination scale and 3× magnifier for precise navigation

The Sun Company ProMap is a featherweight baseplate map compass with an adjustable declination scale, magnifier, and map-measuring tools built for precise navigation on hikes, backpacking trips, and fieldwork.

Whether you're learning land navigation or upgrading your survival kit, the ProMap blends accuracy with portability. It combines a clear rotating dial, declination adjustment, and a 3× magnifier on an ultra-light, transparent baseplate so you can plot bearings and read map details without bulky gear. The compact footprint and break-away lanyard make it easy to carry, while six integrated measurement scales let you translate map distances into real-world routes quickly.

How does the declination scale improve my map readings?

The built-in declination adjustment lets you account for the difference between true north and magnetic north—crucial for accurate bearings across regions. Instead of mentally adding or subtracting degrees, you set the declination on the bezel and take readings directly from the compass, reducing navigation errors.

• Rotating bezel with clear degree markings for quick corrections
• Locking position to hold declination while plotting multiple points
• Works with most topographic and field maps that reference true north

What navigation features help when using a map in the field?

The ProMap offers a transparent baseplate with printed scale rulers and a 3× magnifier so you can plot routes and read fine map text without laying out extra tools. Its needle and index lines are optimized for fast sighting, while the baseplate scales let you measure distance directly from your map.

• Six measurement scales for common map ratios and distance checks
• Large magnifier to read contour lines, labels, and small symbols
• Clear sighting lines on the baseplate for taking accurate bearings

How durable and portable is the ProMap for outdoor trips?

At roughly 1.3 ounces (36 g), the ProMap is designed to be ultra-light without sacrificing function, so it won't weigh down your pack. The rugged plastic construction resists impacts and the included break-away lanyard keeps the compass accessible while preventing snags when clipped to gear.

• Ultralight construction for minimalist packs and long treks
• Break-away lanyard for wearability and safety on the move
• Clear, wear-resistant printing for long-term legibility

How will the ProMap help beginners learn navigation?

The ProMap's straightforward layout and integrated tools make it a practical teaching compass—students can practice plotting bearings, measuring map distances, and learning declination in one device. The magnifier and clear scales reduce frustration when studying maps with small details.

• Simple, visual controls suitable for training and self-study
• All-in-one tool reduces the need for extra accessories
• Lightweight and safe for scouts, kids, and outdoor classes

Who is this for: The Sun Company ProMap is ideal for hikers, backpackers, scouts, instructors, and anyone who needs a reliable, lightweight map compass that simplifies declination correction and map measurement. It suits beginners learning navigation and experienced outdoorspeople who want a compact, accurate tool for plotting routes and confirming bearings on trails, surveys, or expedition routes.
