SUUNTO MC-2 Professional Mirror Sighting Compass — Global Balanced, Clinometer & Declination

The SUUNTO MC-2 is a professional mirror sighting compass engineered for accurate bearings, reliable in low light, and balanced for global use.

The MC-2 combines classic mirror-compass design with modern materials to deliver precise directional readings for demanding outdoor navigation. Built in Finland and designed for field use, it includes features serious hikers, search-and-rescue teams, and mountaineers rely on: a sighting mirror for accurate azimuths, declination adjustment, clinometer for slope measurement, and both metric and imperial map scales. Compact, battery-free, and easy to pair with topographic maps, the MC-2 helps you convert map lines into confident routes across varied terrain.

How does the sighting mirror improve bearing accuracy?

The mirror allows you to take a sighting on a distant object while simultaneously reading the needle, reducing parallax and increasing precision. This setup makes it simpler to lock in exact azimuths on skyline features or marked map points.

• Mirror with sighting slot and notch for two-handed alignment
• Read the compass while keeping the target in view for precise bearings
• Useful for long-distance navigation and triangulation on ridgelines

What map scales and measurement tools are built into the MC-2?

The baseplate carries both metric UTM and imperial scales, plus inch and map-scale rulers to speed map-to-ground conversions. This allows you to measure distances directly on 1:24,000 and 1:50,000 maps without extra tools.

• Metric UTM scales for accurate grid measurements
• Imperial inch ruler and map scales for 1:24,000 and 1:50,000
• Transparent baseplate for precise map positioning and plotting

Can I use the compass in low light and steep terrain?

Yes — the MC-2 has luminous markings to aid orientation in dim conditions and a built-in clinometer for measuring slope angles. These features help maintain situational awareness during dawn, dusk, or when evaluating avalanche slopes and steep approaches.

• Glow-in-the-dark graduations for low-light navigation
• Clinometer to estimate incline and slope stability angles
• Robust housing that tolerates rough handling in alpine environments

How do I account for magnetic declination with this compass?

The compass includes an adjustable declination mechanism so you can correct for the difference between magnetic north and true north without mental conversions. Set the declination once for your area and read bearings directly aligned to map north.

• Integrated declination adjustment tool for quick calibration
• Marked degree scale for precise offset settings
• Prevents repeated manual correction when navigating long routes

Who this is for: The SUUNTO MC-2 is designed for experienced hikers, mountaineers, backcountry guides, search-and-rescue personnel, and navigation students who need a rugged, accurate analog compass. If you rely on map-and-compass skills in remote or technical terrain — where batteries and electronics might fail — the MC-2 provides trusted mechanical navigation tools that pair well with topographic maps and field techniques.
