Novelty Golf Balls

Novelty golf balls are the easy present for the golfer who has everything: printed sets for 40th, 50th, 60th and 80th birthdays, retirement and groomsmen gift boxes, funny-slogan packs, emoji-face putting balls, glow and LED balls for night golf, and trick balls that burst into powder or go off with a bang. Brands include Seenelling, Realspring, MiniInflat and KINGTOP.

Decide whether the ball is a keepsake or for play. Printed gift balls are made to be hit in a casual round, though they usually fly and feel more like a practice ball than a tour ball. Emoji and coloured balls are best on the putting green or in the garden. LED balls switch on by impact or a button and many have an auto-off timer. Exploding and prank balls are single use, so keep them for friends who are in on the joke. For a competition or handicap round, switch back to a ball that meets the Rules of Golf: at least 42.67 mm across and no heavier than 45.93 g.

Novelty Golf Balls: frequently asked questions

Can you play a round with novelty golf balls?

Most printed novelty balls are playable in a friendly round, and birthday sets from brands such as Seenelling are sold as playable balls. Distance and feel are usually closer to a practice ball than a premium ball. Emoji putting balls, trick balls and exploding balls are not designed for full shots, so check each product description before taking them out.

Are novelty golf balls allowed in competitions?

Only if the ball meets the equipment standards in the Rules of Golf, and many competitions also require it to appear on the List of Conforming Golf Balls. Most printed gift balls, LED balls and trick balls will not be on that list, so keep them for social golf, the practice ground and the garden.

How do LED golf balls work?

LED balls have small lights inside a translucent cover. Depending on the model, they switch on when struck or when pressed, and many switch off automatically after a set time, such as the 10-minute timer on some KINGTOP balls. They are designed for night golf and dusk practice; glow tees make it easier to find your tee peg too.

What makes a good golf gift for a birthday or retirement?

Printed balls for a milestone age, a retirement or the wedding party work well because they get used on the course and then kept as a memento. Gift boxes that add tees and a divot tool, such as Realspring sets, make a complete present. Humorous prints suit a society day or a golfing friend with a sense of humour.
