What is the difference between a pool cue and a snooker cue?

Snooker cues usually have a slim 9.5–10 mm tip and a tapered ash shaft, and are often one-piece or three-quarter jointed. American pool cues are two-piece with a wider 12.5–13 mm tip and a maple or carbon shaft, built for the heavier 57 mm balls. UK pub pool cues sit in between, with tips of around 8–9 mm. Matching cue to ball size improves accuracy.

What is a low-deflection pool cue?

When you strike the cue ball off-centre to apply side, it pushes slightly away from your line of aim; this is called deflection or squirt. Low-deflection shafts have a lighter front end, usually from a hollow carbon fibre construction or a cored maple shaft, so the cue ball travels closer to where you aimed. They make the most difference if you play a lot of side.

What weight pool cue should I use?

Most adults play with a cue of around 510–540 g (18–19 oz). Lighter cues feel quicker and suit finesse and touch shots; heavier cues deliver power with less effort, which some players like for breaking. Cues with adjustable weight bolts let you experiment. If you're unsure, start in the middle and adjust once your stroke is consistent.

How should I store a pool or snooker cue?

Keep cues away from radiators, damp garages and direct sunlight, because wooden shafts can warp with changes in temperature and humidity. Store them upright in a wall rack or flat in a hard or padded case, and don't leave a cue leaning against a wall for long periods. Wipe the shaft after play to remove chalk and hand oils.
