Start with shape. Elongated paddles add reach and power on drives and serves but have a narrower sweet spot; widebody paddles give a broader, more forgiving face for players who live at the kitchen line. Core thickness changes feel: a thick 19 mm core absorbs pace for soft dinks and resets, while thinner 13–16 mm cores give more pop. Carbon fibre faces add grip for spin; fibreglass feels livelier. Elongated or widebody pickleball paddle?

Elongated paddles are longer and narrower, which adds reach and leverage for power players and singles. Widebody paddles are shorter and wider, so off-centre hits are more forgiving, which suits doubles players and beginners. Selkirk makes both the SLK ERA and SLK Dauntless in each shape, so you can keep the same feel and change only the shape.

What difference does a 16 mm or 19 mm core make?

A thicker core, such as the 19 mm X7 core in the LUXX Control, dampens the ball off the face, giving more control on dinks, drops and blocks. A thinner core sends the ball off faster for drives and put-aways but is less forgiving on soft shots. Most recreational doubles players find a thicker core easier to control.

Can I use Selkirk paddles in tournaments?

Sanctioned events that follow USA Pickleball rules require paddles on its approved equipment list, and the rules limit a paddle's combined length and width to 61 cm (24 in) with a maximum length of 43.2 cm (17 in). Check the exact model on the USA Pickleball equipment list before entering an event.

What is the difference between indoor and outdoor pickleballs?

Outdoor balls, such as the Selkirk Pro S1, are harder with smaller holes, so they fly truer in wind and survive rough court surfaces. Indoor balls are softer with larger holes and give a slower, more controllable bounce on sports-hall floors. Using outdoor balls indoors makes rallies fast and skiddy.
