SUUNTO MC-2 NH USGS Mirror Sighting Compass — Northern Hemisphere, Fixed Declination & Clinometer

The Suunto MC-2 NH USGS is a professional mirror sighting compass built for precise bearings, declination adjustment, and reliable navigation across the northern hemisphere.

Compact, rugged, and engineered in Finland, the MC-2 NH USGS combines a mirrored sighting system, fixed declination adjustment, and Suunto's two-zone balance to deliver repeatable directional readings for field professionals and outdoor enthusiasts. Lightweight and battery-free, this compass brings practical tools — clinometer, non-slip baseplate, luminous markers and a self-cleaning bezel — into a single tool designed for accuracy on maps, trails, and steep terrain.

How does the MC-2 NH give more accurate bearings than a basic compass?

The mirror sighting system allows you to align a distant landmark and read the bearing through the mirror without moving the compass, dramatically reducing parallax and arm-induced error. A jewel bearing stabilizes the needle for faster, steadier readings, while the sighting notch and hole improve pinpoint aiming.

• Mirror and sighting hole for precise aiming and simultaneous reading
• Jewel bearing for minimal needle wobble and fast settling
• Self-cleaning, easy-read rotating bezel for reliable course setting
• Luminous markers to aid low-light orientation

Why is the two-zone design important for travel and fieldwork?

Suunto's two-zone system balances the needle for either the northern or southern hemisphere rather than one narrow geographic zone, so the MC-2 NH remains stable across a wide latitudinal range. That means fewer needle dip problems and more trustworthy readings when you move between regions within the northern hemisphere or near the equator.

• Engineered for northern-hemisphere use with extended latitude tolerance
• Reduced needle dip for steadier readings across varied terrain
• Reliable when used with USGS maps and metric/imperial scales on the baseplate

What practical features help in surveying, rescue, or outdoor navigation?

The MC-2 NH brings several field-ready features that speed tasks and improve confidence in the results, from fixed declination to a built-in clinometer for measuring slope. A durable mirrored lid protects the dial and doubles as a sighting aid; rubber nonslip feet and a lanyard keep it secure during use.

• Fixed declination adjustment for working in areas with large magnetic variation
• Clinometer to measure ground slope for surveying and avalanche assessment tasks
• Rubber nonslip feet and clear baseplate with rulers for map plotting and pacing
• Lanyard and lightweight construction for comfortable carry and quick access

How does the MC-2 NH hold up in tough conditions?

Built with durable materials and a sealed capsule, the compass is designed to resist impact and keep bearings accurate even after rough use. The mirror lid protects the needle and bezel, and self-cleaning bearings reduce maintenance needs in dirty or wet environments.

• Sealed capsule and self-cleaning bearings for consistent performance
• Mirrored lid for protection and sighting, plus luminous points for low light
• Lightweight metal and plastic construction with a lifetime warranty
• No batteries required — mechanical reliability in any climate

Who this is for: The Suunto MC-2 NH USGS is ideal for surveyors, search-and-rescue teams, wilderness guides, mountaineers, and outdoor professionals who need repeatable, map-accurate bearings. It's also a solid choice for serious hikers, backpackers, and skiers who want pro-level features — declination, clinometer and mirror sighting — in a compact, durable package.
