Ice Hockey Training Aids

Hockey training aids let you work on hands, passing and shooting when ice time is scarce. This range of ice hockey practice equipment includes stickhandling trainers from Winnwell, Hockey Revolution and Filthy Fives, hardwood and weighted stickhandling balls, Green Biscuit off-ice pucks, synthetic ice shooting pads, interlocking dryland tiles, clamp-on and triangle passers, and stick weights for training at home, in the garage or at the rink.

Match the training aid to the surface. Real pucks need low friction, so use a shooting pad (common sizes are 61 x 122 cm and 76 x 152 cm, or 2 x 4 ft and 2.5 x 5 ft) or dryland tiles. On concrete or tarmac, Green Biscuit pucks and 5 cm (2 in) hardwood balls glide or roll without bouncing, so they feel closer to a puck than a tennis ball. Weighted balls such as the Smarthockey 227 g work the wrists, but alternate them with standard balls to keep your timing sharp. A passer gives you return passes for one-timers without a partner.
