What kit do I need to start American football in the UK?

Flag football needs little more than a flag belt and suitable boots, plus a mouthguard where your club asks for one. Contact football adds a helmet with facemask and chin strap, shoulder pads, a mouthguard, and hip, tailbone, thigh and knee pads, usually via a girdle and game trousers. Some clubs lend helmets and pads to beginners, so ask before buying, and check BAFA and club rules for required items.

What is the difference between youth and adult shoulder pads?

Youth pads, such as the Legion M-100 or Battle Defender youth, are fitted to the player's chest and weight and are lighter, with shorter arches and less bulk. Adult pads are sized by chest and shoulder width and often come in position-specific cuts. A player in between should go by fit, not age: pads must cover the shoulders and collarbones without restricting movement.

When should I replace a football helmet chin strap?

Replace it when the padding is compressed, the straps have stretched, or any snap, buckle or clip is cracked or loose. A worn strap lets the helmet shift on contact. Check that a replacement strap or chin cup is made for your helmet type, since hockey and football fittings differ; helmet repair kits supply spare clips, screws and buckles.
