Ice Hockey

Our ice hockey range covers the kit UK players and parents buy before each season and training block: cut-resistant neck guards, jock shorts with cups, gloves, CCM practice jerseys, waxed and non-waxed skate laces, handheld skate sharpeners, stick tape, wax and butt ends, team and stick bags, goalie accessories, pucks, stickhandling balls and passing aids. Labels on the shelf include CCM, Bauer, Blue Sports, Winnwell and A&R Sports.

Ice Hockey UK made neck guards mandatory from 2024 at the levels it governs, so choose one that fits snugly and is made to a recognised neck-laceration standard such as BNQ 9415-370. Lace length rises with skate size, from about 183 cm on small youth skates to 305 cm on big senior boots; the FAQ below has the bands. Waxed laces lock in tension, non-waxed laces slacken off more easily. A pocket sharpener only touches up an edge, so the hollow still needs a machine at the rink. Wax rubbed over fresh blade tape sheds snow and holds its grip longer.

Ice Hockey: frequently asked questions

Are neck guards compulsory in UK ice hockey?

Yes for most players. Ice Hockey UK made neck guards mandatory from 1 January 2024 across the levels it governs, and leagues have adopted similar rules. Rules on approved standards can change, so ask your club or league before the season. Choose a cut-resistant guard that covers the front and sides of the neck and fits closely without restricting breathing.

What length skate laces do I need?

Longer skates need longer laces. Typical bands are 183–213 cm (72–84 in) for youth sizes, roughly 213–244 cm (84–96 in) for junior boots and 244–305 cm (96–120 in) for seniors, with the biggest senior boots at the top end. If unsure, measure your old laces end to end; a little extra length is easier to manage than laces too short to knot.

Can I sharpen ice skates at home?

A handheld sharpener, such as the Blue Sports Sharp Styck, can restore a dull edge between sharpenings or during a session. It does not set the hollow, the groove along the blade, so skates still need regular sharpening on a proper machine at a rink pro shop. Use skate guards whenever you walk off the ice to protect the edges.

Should I wax hockey stick tape?

Waxing the blade after taping helps the tape repel water and snow, so it lasts longer and stays grippy for puck control. Rub the wax over the tape until it is evenly coated. Grip tape or a butt end on the top of the shaft does a different job, giving your top hand a secure hold.
