What do COR and compression mean on a softball?

COR (coefficient of restitution) measures how much energy the ball returns off the bat: a higher number is livelier. Compression, quoted in pounds, is the force needed to squash the ball a set distance: a higher number is harder. Fastpitch balls are commonly .47 COR and 375 compression; slowpitch specifications vary by organisation.

What is the difference between fastpitch and slowpitch softballs?

Fastpitch balls are usually optic yellow with raised red seams so pitchers can spin them. Slowpitch balls often have flat seams and different COR and compression ratings to suit an underarm arc pitch and heavier hitting. Using the wrong type changes how the ball comes off the bat, so match the ball to the game you play.

Which softballs are best for practice?

Practice buckets of 12 to 18 balls save time in fielding and batting drills. For beginners, children or indoor sessions, reduced-impact (RIF) or soft-centre balls such as Rawlings Soft-Dot keep the size and feel of a real ball but are softer to take on a mistimed catch.
