SUUNTO MC-2 Mirror Sighting Compass — Global Balanced, Clinometer & Declination Adjust

The SUUNTO MC-2 is a professional mirror sighting compass engineered for precise bearings, global balancing, and dependable terrain navigation without batteries.

Built in Finland and refined for field use, the MC-2 combines a sighting mirror, adjustable declination, clinometer and global needle balancing to help experienced hikers, guides and rescue personnel take accurate directional readings in challenging conditions. Its clear baseplate, metric UTM scales and inch ruler let you plot positions directly on maps, while rugged materials and a stable needle make the compass reliable in low light and on steep slopes.

How does the MC-2 give more accurate bearings than a basic compass?

The mirror sighting system lets you align the compass with distant landmarks while watching the needle, reducing parallax and human error. The MC-2 also includes a sighting hole and notch for two-point alignment, plus an adjustable declination scale to correct for local magnetic variation.

• Mirror sighting for simultaneous landmark and dial viewing
• Sighting hole and notch for precise two-point aiming
• Adjustable declination for true north corrections
• Stable, liquid-damped needle for steady readings

Can I use this compass anywhere in the world?

Yes—the MC-2’s needle is balanced for global use, so it performs reliably across latitudes without excessive dip or sluggish swings. Graduated baseplate scales include metric UTM grids to plot coordinates on standard topographic maps, and an inch ruler helps with scale conversions.

• Globally balanced needle minimizes dip at different latitudes
• Metric UTM scales for direct map plotting
• Inch ruler for quick measured distances and map scaling
• Durable construction suited to varied climates and conditions

What features help in low light or steep terrain conditions?

The MC-2 is designed for visibility and control when conditions get tough. The mirror doubles as a sight and protective cover, and the needle is easily read in dim light thanks to its contrasting coloring and liquid damping that stabilizes motion on slopes.

• Sighting mirror increases aiming precision and adds protection
• Clinometer for measuring slope angles during ascents or glacial travel
• Liquid-damped needle stays steady on steep ground
• Clear, high-contrast markings for quick reading

How durable and maintenance-friendly is the SUUNTO MC-2?

The MC-2 uses robust materials and a straightforward mechanical design so it withstands knocks, moisture, and repeated outdoor use without electronics or batteries to fail. Basic care—keeping the mirror and needle clean and avoiding long-term exposure to extreme heat—keeps it accurate over years of service.

• Solid construction resists impact and weathering
• No batteries required—mechanical reliability in remote locations
• Easy-to-clean mirror and baseplate for consistent readings
• Clinometer and scales protected under a clear baseplate

Who is this for? The SUUNTO MC-2 is ideal for professional guides, search and rescue teams, mountaineers, backcountry skiers, and serious hikers who need precise, repeatable bearings and map plotting capabilities. If you plan routes in remote terrain, rely on accurate slope measurements, or require a globally balanced, maintenance-light compass that performs in low light and steep conditions, the MC-2 is designed to meet those needs reliably.
